Information Processing, as described by Alberta Learning, "helps students develop knowledge and skills relating to computer technologies in six areas: systems management, text/data input, productivity software, applied processing, programming, and emerging technologies."

Alberta Learning further describes Information Processing as "representing the study of electronic technologies as they apply to personal use and the business environment. As we move more rapidly into the information age, it is crucial that students are able to use electronic technologies to access and manipulate information in an efficient manner. Accurate, timely information is the basis for sound decision making and effective communication. As students build confidence in their understanding of the various information processing tools and procedures, they will be able to transfer their knowledge and skill to a wide range of contexts. Students will also be better able to adapt to the continual changes caused by the evolving technologies."

The above statements, you could say, are the reasons for registering in such a course.

Information Processing is organized into modules. These classes will consist of the modules listed under the headings "Info Pro 10" for Information Processing 10 students, "Info Pro 20" for Information Processing 20 students and the modules listed under the heading "Info Pro 30" are the modules Information Processing 30 students will complete.

Info Pro 20 and 30 students keep in mind that there are prerequisites to some of the modules and that those will need to be completed before you begin work on certain modules.

Information Processing 20 students: The first 3 modules are mandatory and the rest can be chosen by the you.

Information Processing 30 students: The first 3 modules are mandatory and the rest can be chosen by the you.

The Module Overviews are as follows:

Information Processing 10

INF1020 Keyboarding I- 1 credit

This module provides an opportunity for students to develop accurate touch-typing of text and data appropriate for personal use and the application of efficient workstation procedures.

INF1030 Word Processing I - 1 credit

This module provides an opportunity for students to develop skill in using basic-commands and functions in word processing software, including document editing, formatting and printing of reports, correspondence, and tables suitable for personal use applications.

INF1060 Spreadsheets I - 1 credit

Students have an opportunity to use basic functions and commands in spreadsheet software for general data manipulation and personal record keeping.

INF1040 Graphics Tools - 1 credit

Students learn the basic commands and functions of computer graphic software, including bit mapped graphics (paint programs), vector graphics (draw program) and presentation graphics. Students develop basic skills in manipulating pre-made graphics as well as producing their own graphics.

Module Overviews

Information Processing is organized by modules. This class will consist of the following modules:

INF2030 Keyboarding II - 1 credit (Prerequisite - INF1020 - Keyboarding I)

This module enhances the student's personal keyboarding competencies by increasing the rate of accurate touch-keystroking of the alphabet and numbers and selected punctuation keys.

INF2040 Keyboarding III - 1 credit (Prerequisite - INF2030 - Keyboarding II)

Students enhance their keyboarding competencies, by increasing the rate of accurate touch keystroking of alphabetic, numeric, and all punctuation keys to support personal use and limited, entry-level, workplace opportunities.

INF2050 Word Processing II - 1 credit (Prerequisite - INF1030 - Word Processing I)

Students expand their skills in using word processing software commands and functions to produce mailable reports and correspondence, including letters, memorandums and tables, all from rough draft copy.

INF2080 Spreadsheet II - 1 credit (Prerequisite - INF1060 - Spreadsheet I)

Students will demonstrate advanced level spreadsheet commands and functions to calculate and manipulate data and prepare appropriate printouts and reports in text and graphic format.

INF2130 - Multimedia Authoring I - 1credit (Prerequisite - INF1070 - Hypermedia Tools)

This module enhances the use of multimedia software and provides an opportunity to develop further skills in basic authoring competence using PowerPoint by planning, editing and testing of a 3-5 minute multimedia presentation that includes text, video and audio with individual components supporting a common theme.

INF2060 - Electronic Publishing I - 1 credit

This module provides an opportunity for students to develop skill using electronic/desktop-publishing software to create a well-designed one and two page camera-ready publication focusing on the use of basic software functions and layout principles.

INF2200 Information Highway II - 1 credit (Prerequisite - INF1090 - Information Highway I)

Students learn the use of HTML and will produce a web site for the Internet

Any students wishing to complete a module at the introductory level (grade ten level) can do so if they have not yet received credit for that particular module.
