Independant Learning Centre

The Independent Learning Centre

The Independent Learning Centre (ILC) has been a program at the LCI for the past eight years. Although it was originally developed to address attendance issues, it has blossomed into a “catch net” program at the school in that it addresses many individual student needs.

Courses in the ILC are not offered to students as a CHOICE for course completion. The Lethbridge Collegiate Institute offers education in regular classrooms where students are most likely to experience stimulation, success and involvement as a member of a community of learners, taking the course journey together. However, in a school the size of LCI, there are many occasions when a student’s individual situation does not fit snugly with the structure of LCI. The ILC functions as an alternative for many of these situations, providing flexibility and possible options. These options are provided via collaboration with administration, counselors and Mrs. Dodge. Each student is unique, with unique needs and history. These needs could be caused by timetabling problems, illness, attendance issues, credit problems, challenge situations, personal issues etc.

We try to deliver the best possible program to each student.

Although the ILC does NOT offer every course that can be offered in classrooms, it does supply most core subject courses and a selection of option courses.

The students in the INDEPENDENT LEARNING CENTRE work in a welcoming, functional workspace in the G wing. Some idea of the atmosphere can be seen in the photos on this page.
