General Music 

MUSIC 10, 20, 30 [5 Credits]

This is a choral music course designed to help beginning and experienced singers improve their singing abilities. It is helpful for performing arts students as well. They sample all kinds of music and learn sight-reading technique as well as ear training. Music 10 is a prerequisite to Music 20, and 30, exceptions are at the discretion of the instructor. No experience is necessary and both male and female singers from Grades10-12 are welcome. Students enrolled in Music 10, 20, 30 rehearse as one chorus, expectations for each level are different. Those expectations are prescribed by the instructor for those students who are unable to take Music 10 and 20 for 5 credits a semester. Music 10 or 20 can be taken for 3 credits in any semester.

MUSIC AND TECHNOLOGY


The Music and Technology module explores the use of electronic technology and its application to the fundamentals of music. The module is divided into the following areas of study: Science of Sound, Synthesis, MIDI [music industry digital interface], Sound Reinforcement, Sequencing, Multi-track Recording, Related Computer Programs, Synchronization, Sampling and Signal Processing. For the school year 1999-2000, this course will be offered for 3 and/or 5 credits at the Grade 10 level only.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC 10, 20, 30 [5 Credits]

Prerequisite is previous instrumental training. Some exceptions may be made under certain circumstances with permission of the instructor. These courses are designed to allow individuals to participate in a performing concert band experience. The courses will provide opportunities for participation in a variety of performances including tours, concerts, workshops and competitions. Music students explore a variety of musical itineraries.

STAGE BAND/JAZZ COMBO

Prerequisite for this course - a student must be currently registered in Concert Band or instrumental Music 10, 20, 30. A music background is mandatory. These courses provide the student with the opportunity to participate in a group beyond the realms of the concert band. The emphasis is on jazz and improvisation in particular. It emphasizes individual creativity within a group and provides the student with the opportunity for composing and arranging. Course performance includes local, provincial and national festival competition, school concerts, assemblies and ceremonies throughout the city.
