Excellence in Academics
Advanced Placement (AP)
This internationally recognized program is for academically talented high school students who want to develop the advanced skills that will increase their success in university.
The Advanced Placement Program:
¨ Provides the opportunity to pursue university-level studies while still in high school.
¨ Allows students to be academically challenged and receive credit at over 3000 post secondary institutions in 60 countries, worldwide.
¨ Virtually guarantees a smooth transition to university course work. As well, participation in the AP Program contributes to greater success in Provincial Diploma Exams for students.
¨ Helps students develop an extension of an advanced skill set and time management skills.
"The Advanced Placement Program at LCI has not only challenged me academically, but it has opened up potential avenues for scholarships and university choices. By gaining admission into the program, I have grown accustomed to the academic rigors and expectations that university will present in the near future. The Advanced Placement Program - an academic challenge I am glad I accepted.” - Nabaa - LCI, 2011 |
The AP Program offers flexibility for individual needs in program planning:
¨ Complete a full “International Diploma” in AP or complete any combination of one or more courses.
¨ Academic timetables can be tailored to individual abilities, interests, and extra-curricular time commitments.
The AP International Diploma
Some students may choose to earn a Full International Diploma in AP. To do this, students must complete all five AP course sequences below:
English (World Literature):
Courses: English 10-1AP, 20-1AP, 30-1AP and World Literature 35AP
Second Language (French/any home language):
Courses: French 20AP, 30AP, 31AP or FLA 10, 20, 30 or any home language where fluency is high
Global Perspectives (World History):
Courses: Social 10AP, 20AP, 30AP and World History 35AP
Math or Science:
Courses: Math 10AP, 20AP, 30AP, 31AP or Science 10AP, Biology 20AP, 30AP or Science 10AP, Physics 20AP, 30AP, 35AP
One other AP subject:
Usually students take both a Math and a Science, or two Sciences to fulfill this requirement.
NOTE:
If second language credit is granted for students fluent in a home language, five AP courses are still required to earn an International Diploma. Students in this situation should choose to take English, Social, Math, Biology, and Physics.
International Diploma students will have room in their timetables to take Chemistry.
Partial AP Programs
¨ Students are not required to complete an International Diploma but instead may choose to study at the AP level in any combination of one or more courses.
¨ Students may customize their programs by combining AP courses with other “Access to Excellence” courses such as those from Advanced Performance in Fine Arts or Craftsmanship in the Trades.
¨ Generally students should maintain an 80% average in the AP courses in order to qualify for the next level; however, students might be allowed to continue their AP studies with grades below 80% at the discretion of the AP teacher.
¨ Students may choose to transfer from AP courses into regular courses at any time in their high school program. Usually such a switch is done at the end of a semester.
¨ There is some opportunity for students to move from the regular classes into AP-level studies, particularly after Grade 10, and in some cases, after Grade 11. (Completion of the Full International Diploma requires that students be in the program starting in Grade 10.)
Advanced Skill Set
¨ Improves writing skills and problem-solving techniques
¨ Encourages students to become creative thinkers
¨ Develops study habits and time management skills
¨ Demonstrates readiness for university and college to admission committees
¨ Shows initiative and commitment to academic excellence
¨ Explores the world from a variety of perspectives
¨ Explores subjects in greater depth and detail than that prescribed by the Alberta Program of Studies
¨ Offers students the opportunity for advanced group-work skills and working with teachers on a higher level
Beyond High School
"The truth is that I am only now discovering the best benefits of being in the AP Program. I find that now that I am in university, I am appreciating my AP classes so much more. Not only does AP give you the study skills necessary to succeed at the post secondary level, but it also gives you a head start on course material. I learned much of the same things in my AP courses as I am learning now in university; so even if you decide to use your AP courses for credit, you still have an academic advantage!."
- Lexa - LCI Grad, 2010
Completion of AP courses leads to:
¨ Advanced credit in some introductory university courses
¨ Advanced skill sets that ensure greater success in university
¨ Improved chances to earn scholarships
